Students will be able to:
- participate in a wide variety of professional and everyday conversations in Spanish with only a limited number of misunderstandings, including with native Spanish speakers who are not accustomed to conversing with non-native speakers;
- read and write Spanish texts in a largely clear, precise, and accurate way, including the kinds of texts that are common in professional contexts (e.g., emails, memos, contracts, bills, reports, and minutes);
- explain the influence of history, geography, and institutions on the development of Spanish-speaking countries and regions;
- characterize the values, attitudes, customs, beliefs, and conventions particular to various Spanish-speaking countries and regions;
- discuss the major writers, genres, and periods of Spanish and Latin-American literature; and
- interpret beyond surface meaning and discuss representative works from the major writers, genres, and periods of Spanish and Latin-American literature.
